Day 4: Because I wanted to keep going with the international theme

Deciding I needed some more international flare in my life, I searched the Internet for some other festive holiday treats. I found this recipe for Zimtsterne, which is a German cinnamon almond star cookie. Upon learning there is absolutely no butter or flour in this recipe, I was intrigued.

I will admit to you, this was almost a disaster. The ingredients call for 2 cups of powdered sugar but the instructions tell you to only mix in 1/2 c. powdered sugar to start. I definitely dumped the whole 2 cups into the almond mixture. After a few curse words were uttered, I some how managed to reverse my mistake (thanks to a sifter and a little engineering) and muscle through in order to bring you these little stars:

I took this picture when they were straight out of the oven. Apparently you have to let them dry out a bit before they are ready. So sorry they look a little crumbly. The top is meringue and the base is basically a ground up almond dough with cinnamon and lemon zest. I have already eaten 5 of them. These take a little time, but they are worth it!
