At one point, I think I knew why it couldn't just be the first Tuesday in November, but my short term memory is failing me recently. And I am too lazy right now to look it up. Nevertheless, we have reached the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. And what a glorious day it is.
I was a bit concerned when the line was longer at Subway than it was at my polling place, but those ancient poll volunteers assured me there had already been more people in my precinct today than had turned out for the primaries. And it was noon. So that is a good sign.
I learned today that employers are required to allow employees two hours of paid leave in order to allow them to vote. I wonder how many people realize this. And I wonder how many people do not take advantage of this. My dad got the whole day off, which I think all companies should do. One day every four years can't be that bad.
I have poured a glass of red wine, settled in with my husband and our friend JH is on his way over to watch the festivities. I might go wild and tie red and blue bandannas on Hank and Lola. Who knows.
Happy Election Day everyone!
