Yesterday was the first day I awoke to sunshine streaming in my window in more than a week. Instead of springing out of bed, grabbing my yoga mat and racing to class, I decided to do some yardwork. We have two fairly large flower beds in our front yard that have not been touched in the two years that my husband has resided in our home. (To my credit, I moved in after we got married, so I am responsible for only five months of the neglect to our landscaping).
So I found some old tennis shoes, put on my gardening gloves and headed for the front yard. I pulled up EVERYTHING. I found some tulips burried under two years worth of leaves, some lovely hostas, a few unusually large earth worms and about a truck load's worth of debris.
Wanting to get rid of all that stuff, my loving husband and I loaded up the truck, grabbed our pug and looked up directions to the green waste site of Tulsa. (Which, by the way, is really far away).
I asked Matt if he had the keys to the truck, he said yes, so I set down my keys to the jetta on the kitchen table. We locked the door behind us and headed out. Only to find that Matt didn't really have the keys to the truck. Or keys to the house. Or keys to anything.
No big deal, I thought. I would just call mom, who has our spare key, and have her come let us back into our house. Except Mom was out of town. With the spare key in her purse. Thank goodness for Matt's really cool Christmas gift from his wife (an iphone). We looked up a locksmith and called in our emergency. For the next 45 mins, we just sat outside...Matt practiced his golf swing, I read the Time magazine that the friendly postman delivered while we waited.
Our handy locksmith arrived, only to tell us that he couldn't pick our lock. I have mixed feelings on whether that was a good thing, or a bad thing, but either way, it was frustrating. So we had him drill out our lock and replace it and we were back in business. As he was leaving, Matt asked him how he got his start in the business. The locksmith replied- "Well, I was a thief. And I got caught. So here I am." Geesh. Matt and I agreed that we should really work on not locking ourselves out anymore.
We hauled our former flowerbeds to the dump and returned to our house, which had not been robbed by anyone, thank goodness. I am paying dearly for my gardening this morning. My allergies are out of control and my back aches. But we have some lovely landscaping going on, so it was worth it. And that's about all the excitement in our household on this Sunday morning.
