To start things off, keep in mind we live in suburbia. All the mailboxes look the same. We get excited when someone landscapes because it gives the whole street a "new look". And, as I have mentioned before, there are 1.7 million kids who live in our neighborhood.
There is a girl across the street who has befriended us. We'll call her sassy pants. For being under the age of 10, she thinks she's pretty hot to trot. And yes, I just used the phrase hot to trot to describe an elementary schooler. Long story short, she loves our dogs. Yes, she has two dogs of her own, but she loves ours more. I mean, they are pugs, and you really can't blame her. But I digress.
Tonight, sassy pants rang our doorbell and asked if we were planning on walking our dogs so she could come along. She rings our doorbell every night and asks the same question. And every night I come up with some excuse to turn her down. To my credit, I have insisted on meeting her mother, but I have only gotten a small wave from a half open front door.
After turning the poor girl down about a million times, I looked at my loving husband and asked if he would help me take the dogs and sassy pants for a walk around the block. He obliged. While rounding the corner of our block, we ran into Twin #1 and Twin #2 who were riding their scooters. Twin #1 and Twin #2 asked if they could join us on the walk. I asked if it was ok with their mom and they obediently went and found their mom and brought her out to meet us.
Mom-of-the-twins came out and told my loving husband and I that we were "famous in the neighborhood" for our dogs. I think I looked down, blushed a little and then smiled triumphantly to myself. My loving husband just chewed his fingernails and stared blankly at the mom.
We continued on our walk and picked up two circling boys on their bicycles. I looked at my loving husband and asked, "What are we, the pied pipers?"
If you don't know me and and my loving husband in real life, then you don't know that we are both incredibly awkward and uncomfortable around kids. There is a reason we have two absolutely fabulous dogs and zero children. But tonight, we were talk of the neighborhood. Ok, our dogs were talk of the neighborhood. But I will take what I can get.
After completing our walk, we dropped all children off at their respective homes and headed back to ours. I immediately went to open a bottle of wine. I think our two empty bedrooms in our house might just stay empty for a while.

ohhhhh this post was fantastic. I would've loved to see you two with a slew of small people behind you. Better than any parade I'd say. I'm glad Hank & Lola are so famous!
Personally, I think it is a mix of cute dogs and two very nice people. You know, my kids love you both sans dogs, so don't sell yourself short! :) I have to say, I just love the visual images from this post. I think we need some video footage, too.
Other people's kids are much better than having your own. Lola will be a pouty pug when you start a family beyond her and Hank.
