Just Call Me Sylvia Browne...aka the longest blog post ever

In honor of my rant against Christmas jumping the gun on Thanksgiving, I am going to completely contradict myself and jump the gun on Christmas by talking about New Year's. Seems like the only logical thing to do as I sit in my office, the lone soldier who has come into work today.

Horoscopes always seem to draw mixed reactions from people...some people live by them, some people think they are just for fun, some follow them daily, some follow them seasonally, some think they are evil, some think they are always inaccurate and some think they are always true. I fall in between several of these categories. I mostly think they are purposely vague so the reader can construe the meanings to fit perfectly into their situation, but hey, whatever. When in Rome. (A little continuation of the anchorman references- thankyouverymuch.)

Being the really cool Capricorn that I am, I always like to read about the traits of my "sign" and see if I agree or disagree. For the most part, the descriptions are completely and totally, eerily accurate. Since we are in the season of the Capricorn, I thought it would be fun to post the predictions for Capricorns for 2009 and then check back in a year and see if any of them were right or not. I do sincerely hope I can keep this blog up for that long! We'll give it the old college try.

Here is my 2009 Preview, compliments of msn:

No matter how scary the stories in the newspapers might be, you're not paying attention. You've always managed before, and you will this time as well. Hmmm...not a very rosy forecast, but they try to put a little cherry on top with the second sentence. Maybe someone else's prediction will warm my little heart with some encouraging news....here is another 2009 preview from a site I found when I googled 2009 horoscopes:

First of all, I definitely think think this was translated into English from some other latin language. Secondly and more importantly, this one has me worried. Maybe this post was a horrible idea. I think I will just post some fun Capricorn facts and call it a day. No need to get myself all worked up over an online prediction. I mean, who would do that??? Not me. Nope.

Ok, here are some Capricorn Tidbits sprinkled with my own, unsolicited comments:


Colors
The color of choice for Capricorn is brown. In fact, most dark colors do well for this sign.
Oh, I do love dark colors!! My wedding colors were mostly sable, rust and champagne! Ok, so yeah, that is just a fancy way of saying brown, orange and ivory, but whatever.

Gemstone
Capricorn's star stone is the black onyx. Hmmm...I always thought my birthstone was a garnet, but I will use this new found piece of information as an excuse to go shopping for some new jewelry. Things are looking up.

Lucky Numbers
Capricorn's lucky numbers are 6, 8, and 9. I always thought my lucky number was 5 and/or 7. Clearly I was mistaken.

Compatibility
Capricorns are most compatible with Taurus and Virgo. I SO married a Virgo! I always thought we were compatible, but this definitely confirms it.

Opposite Sign
The opposite sign for Capricorn is Cancer. Does opposite = incompatible? If so, I am going to have to research all my arch nemeses from middle school and see if they were Cancers. It would explain a lot if they were.

The Perfect Gift
Practical, dark-colored, well-made clothing and high-tech gadgets. Ok, I am going to have to disagree a little on this one. While I do like practical, dark colored, well-made things, I normally don't like the price of high quality items- hence the practicality issue. And high tech gadgets? Have I mentioned I don't know how to work a DVD player or get pictures off my camera and onto the computer? I have? Well, you get the point.

Likes
Family, tradition, quality craftsmanship, understated status, music. Agree, agree, agree, agree, agree. Tradition is a big one for me. You would shudder at the amount of traditions I am trying to force upon my loving husband.

Dislikes
Almost everything at some point. BAH-HAHAHA. So very, very true.

House
Natural sign of the Tenth House. This house focuses on reputation, profession, authorities, and status. I am no astrologer, but this somehow contradicts my likes of "understated status" doesn't it?

Famous Capricorns
Mary J. Blige, Nicolas Cage, Ricky Martin, Kid Rock, Denzel Washington. I might also add Katie Courick and Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States.

Best Travel Destination
Mexico, Cuba, India, Delphi, Oxford. Well, we went to Mexico for our honeymoon so check that off the list, but I am a little unsure of where the heck Delphi is. Oh wait, you're telling me it's in Greece? Perfect. Another excuse to book a trip.

Strengths
Responsible, good managers, disciplined, self-control, dark sense of humor. Dark sense of humor is an understatement. I sometimes feel like very few people "get" me. And I loved the movies Rushmore, Little Miss Sunshine and The Royal Tenenbaums. And of course So I Married and Axe Murderer. WO-man...

Weaknesses
Know-it-all, unforgiving, condescending, expecting the worst. Ok, who really likes admitting their weaknesses, but I do constantly expect the worst. To my credit, by lowering expectations, I think it makes the good seem even better.

Best environment
Positive work situation, urban environments with culture and style, anyplace to be in charge. I wouldn't exactly call the three places I have lived in my life "urban" (Tulsa and Stillwater, OK and Stamford, CT) but hey. I tried/try to find the culture in each of them. Even if it meant popping my collar and buying some loafers. When in Rome. (nailed it!)

And there you have it my little astrologians. I don't even think that is a word. I was going to recommend other people take a sneak peek at their 2009 horoscopes and then we can all report back in 2010, but if the reports are as dim as mine were, I really don't want to be responsible for ruining your holidays. So in uncharacteristic capricorn fashion- here's to a great 2008 Holiday Season and an even better 2009!
